WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s track & field teams competed in the Camel City Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Freshman James Harris finished first for the second straight meet but for the first time in the men’s 400m event.
Harris won in his hometown running a 49.92 in the 400m event. He has shown his versatility running in the 200m, 300m, and 400m events so far this indoor season. Harris placed first last weekend at the Dick Taylor Challenge in the 300m.
Sophomore Gianna Marquez (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished third in the 600m with a time of 1:38.52. This was only the second time that Marquez has competed in the 600m in her career, making her first appearance at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-off in early December.
Two additional standouts included sophomore Sydni Smith (Bladensburg, Md.) and freshman Melanne Sutton (Greenville, N.C.). Smith placed fourth in the 400m (1:01.98) while Sutton earned a top-five finish in the 200m (26.02).
The Eagles are back in action next weekend traveling to Lynchburg, Va. for the Liberty University Open on Feb. 3.
